A small-batch 12 year old Real McCoy Bajan rum crafted with a unique balance of copper column and pot stills and matured in heavily charred American oak bourbon barrels. Rich and oak-y, with bundles of Christmas cake, Demerara sugar and pipe tobacco notes.

The 'Real McCoy' name is based on the nickname believed to have been given to the spirits sold by Bill McCoy, legendary Prohibition-era smuggler.

The Real McCoy Rum is based on the story of Bill McCoy, the pioneer rum runner of the Prohibition era. In January of 1920, McCoy was the first to fill a boat with alcohol in the Caribbean, sail it up to New York City, and legally act as a floating liquor store three miles off shore. McCoy was careful to always stay outside the three mile limit, which was international waters in the early days of U.S. Prohibition. (Clever, right?).

McCoy made a name for himself because he never adulterated the alcohol. While copy-cat rum runners would dilute their alcohol with wicked chemicals like turpentine, wood alcohol and prune juice, McCoy never did. The sullied products were nicknamed "Booze," "Hooch" and "Rot Gut," while McCoy’s quality spirits became known as "The Real McCoy."

Fast forward to the twenty first century, Founder and CEO, Bailey Pryor, came up with the idea to make The Real McCoy Rum while producing a documentary film about Bill McCoy for Public Television in the United States.

During his research for the film, Bailey travelled to the Caribbean island of Barbados, where he met Richard Seale, the 4th generation Master Distiller at his family-owned Foursquare Distillery. Together, Bailey and Richard developed a classic style Barbados rum, adhering to McCoy's strict regimen of never adulterating the rum with added sugars, flavours or perfumes. The resulting rum is artisan crafted in small batches, using a rare combination of column and pot still distillate, and authentically aging in American oak ex-bourbon barrels. The goal? Make a rum that actually lived up to the name "The Real McCoy."

The owners of Foursquare Distillery, the Seale family, can trace its roots on Barbados back to the 1650s, and can reference five generations of rum-making expertise dating back to 1820. The establishment of the Foursquare brand, however, came much later. While the family could lay claim to one of Barbados’ oldest trading houses, Reginald Leon Seale was prohibited, like other traders, from selling rum directly to consumers under the Barbados Excise Law. His method around this issue was to establish a distribution business in Bridgetown in the early 1900s - and this was the birth of the R. L. Seale brand.

R.L. Seale was not the only trader who took this course of action, but he was one of the very few successful ones. This prosperity provided the opportunity for expansion, and from 1962 to 1993, the rum portfolios of ESA Field and Alleyne Arthur, including Old Brigand, Taylor's Falernum and Doorly's were acquired. In order for the multiple brands to be effectively consolidated, a decision was made that ESA Field and Old Brigand would focus on the local market, where they had always done well, while Doorly's would become an export brand.

This was the state of affairs until 1995 when the company, then led by Sir David Seale, gambled on the purchase of a sugar factory whose oldest building dates back to 1636 and was mostly decrepit. His intuition paid off, however, and that site became Foursquare Distillery, Now, it stands as one of the most efficient and modern rum distilleries around, complete with a state-of-the-art bottling plant on site.
