Akitu Pinot Noir Blanc 2020

Akitu Pinot Noir Blanc 2020

  • Pinot Noir Blanc
  • New Zealand, 750ml

The aromatics are subtle and focused, very delicate raspberry sorbet with honeysuckle and mandarin blossom, ripe lemons and a hint of musk like Bartlett Pears. The palate leads with the pear and a touch of Bickfords lime cordial, starting tight and focused then fanning into an array of texture and flavour. That mouthfeel is carried along by assertive yet silky acidity that is so juicy that it almost evaporates from your tongue to give an architectural void supported with pillars of flavour and structure.

"This style of Pinot Noir is not only utterly delicious and equally refreshing, it is the purest example of the vineyard and the vintage that we can imagine. Unlike a Rosé, a blanc wine spends no time on skins.  The white juice that hides inside the red grape skins makes a fascinating wine.  Only the juice from 100% Pinot Noir fruit can be called Pinot Noir Blanc, which is easy for us as it's the only thing we grow." Akitu

Akitu, in the Maori language, means the summit, the apex or the highest point. We called our wine that because at 380 metres above sea level we are right up there, right on the grape growing edge, against the alps and in the southern most winemaking region on earth. Here Akitu's entire vineyard is dedicated to Pinot Noir – that’s all thats grown, the very best of the harvest makes Akitu.

The vineyard has been laid out in 6 sections: planted in 2002. Akitu have 45,000 vines in 12 hectares of Pinot Noir, planted across the vineyard according to soil and aspect. Over the years Akitu has watched these 12 different plants settle and begin to express wonderfully diverse characters. They respond to weather conditions and the evolution of each vintage, quite differently and present Akitu with a rich palette of choice come blending time.
