Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label which is growing up and getting a large export following.

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe.

Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere Valley to the Kekerengu Coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

Simon has this to say about Durvillea: “All along Marlborough’s coast, clinging to rocks at low tide is the seaweed Durvillea. We know it as bull kelp or rimurapa. As a young man at university I studied seaweed. Named for the captain of the Astrolabe, Durvillea seaweed is my quintessential emblem of our wild coast. The Durvillea grapes are grown in the Waihopai, Wairau and Awatere Valleys of Marlborough. The grapes are harvested at precisely the right moment and I preserve the purity and intensity of flavour in my winemaking. Durvillea is Astrolabe’s little sister label.

This provides us with the opportunity to offer another range of classic Marlborough wines from our Astrolabe vineyards.”
