“The bouquet and palate of this Chardonnay showcase fine winemaking, really good fruit and Marlborough. Aromas and flavours of lemon and apple, grapefruit and new oak, a crumbled soil mineral layer and super fine wood tannins. The acidity is plentiful helping to push the messages of youth, fruit purity and freshness. Medium plus weight, satin texture, balanced, well made and ready.” Cameron Douglas

“The 2018 vintage was hand-picked at two sites, in the lower Wairau Valley and the Southern Valleys, and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques and puncheons. Fragrant and mouthfilling, it has excellent depth of ripe, peachy, slightly toasty flavours, showing good complexity, gentle acidity and a creamy-smooth finish. It’s already drinking well.” Michael Cooper

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.
