The estate Graffetta is located in the area of Ragusa, close to Ispica and also to Noto and Monica, the most representative cities of the Sicilian Baroque. Wine culture here dates back to the XVIIth Century and this area is the original home of Nero d’Avola. Outside of Nero d’Avola, international varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot have proved to grow well here, and their typical herbal notes melt into an almost tropical pleasantness. In addition, in vineyards close to Segesta, almost 600m above sea level, we harvest the white Grillo grapes, from which we make a varietal wine, fresh and with a delicate bouquet.
The bird on the label is the magpie, combining with a coral image to represent the meeting of land and sea. It’s said that in ancient times the vineyard area was a coral reef, while the magpie, with his love of shiny objects, represents good fortune.
Salvatore Martinico is a Sicilian native who makes all the small-production wines of Graffetta. Under his direction, the estate has expanded from making reds in Ragusa to making a gorgeous white with the native Grillo in Segesta, on the western end of the island of Sicily (near to Marsala where the grape is typically used for the famous fortified wine). The distance of 250 kilometres between the vineyards presents a logistical challenge for the winery, but Salvatore believes firmly in growing the right grapes in the right areas.
All four of the wines are made from individual, tiny vineyards, ranging from 4ha of Cabernets to 10ha of Nero d'Avola (Graffetta's flagship and most popular wine). The age of the vineyards is typically 8-12 years, and they are managed sustainably at every level.
