"Bright, pale yellow, even colour throughout. The nose is elegant and soft, crunchy minerals, pear, yellow stonefruit intermix wildflower and honey. Medium-bodied, Nashi pear and nectarines have a pure expression, interweave lemon sherbet, lemon zest, unfolding white floral and honey nuances. A subtle sweetness nicely balances acidity, lingers with zesty freshness and adds interest. Oily texture mouthfeel adorned by a very fine powdery, chalky line, carry the wine to linearity." Winery notes - Full bodied and interesting, the ’20 matches earlier vintages in terms of aroma – white stonefruits, toasted brioche notes from barrel fermentation and the classic Audrey’s trait of a subtle minerality weaving its way through. In the mouth, the natural dry extract gives weight without needing residual sugar to body the palate. The acidity is finely balanced to give life and length to the wine. A fine veil of phenolics adds texture and dimension in this wine.
In 1852 William Ostler emigrated from Yorkshire to New Zealand to manage Benmore Station near Omarama for Robert Campbell. Campbell, of Castle Duntroon in Scotland, had already emigrated and bought Otekaieke Station in the lower Waitaki.
As a pioneer in the new colony Ostler soon desired his own station and, in time, bought first Ben Ohau behind today's Twizel township, and subsequently Lilibank at the head of Lake Tekapo, from the original squatters who had occupied the vast tracts of land some years before.
In 1998, unaware of this history, Ostler's great grandson Jim Jerram and his brother-in-law, winemaker and viticulturist Jeff Sinnott, went prospecting for suitable grape-growing country in the lower Waitaki's limestone country, inland from Oamaru. At that time there was no history of commercial winegrowing in the region.
The two discovered a site Sinnott believed encapsulated the essential parameters for growing premium cool climate wine grapes; a north-facing limestone-influenced slope on an escarpment overlooking the braided river. It reminded him of the famous slopes of Burgundy.
The first Pinot Noir vines were planted at 'Clos Ostler' in 2002 and, with Jeff Sinnott as partner, viticultural adviser and winemaker, the venture was a launched. Over the next two years, further Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines were planted.
International recognition and accolades soon followed for wines of a unique style...
An ancient geological faulting process which occurred in the Valley created our unique 'Clos Ostler' vineyard site. A 38 million year old seabed was raised into a north facing limestone slope overlooking the braided Waitaki River.
The original site of Ostler Vineyards' vines, 'Clos Ostler' on Racecourse Road, was the raisin d'etre for the venture. Described by winemaker Jeff Sinnott as having "perhaps one of the most viticulturally significant soils in New Zealand", the site produces wines which elegantly express its terroir. As such, they are unique - different even from those of neighbouring wine regions. A combination of the valley's climate, superimposed on the vineyard's aspect, soils and limestone substrata ensures unusual levels of complexity within the fruit flavours.
The attention of vineyard staff to accurate viticulture provides the human element essential to achieve the balance for this process. The word fastidious comes to mind. In a climate close to the margins for winegrowing the requirement for achieving greatness is absolute attention to detail in the vineyard.
In addition to our estate-grown wines from 'Clos Ostler', Ostler produces wines from fruit grown by selected growers within the Waitaki Valley. The source of our wines is always identified on their labels as designated vineyards, or as 'Waitaki Valley' generically if grapes are supplied from more than one vineyard to make the wine.
All Ostler wines are from 100% Waitaki sourced fruit. Unique, liquid geography!
