Amisfield

Founded in 1988, Amisfield is one of Central Otago’s most distinctive single-estate wineries, set beneath the dramatic Pisa Range near Lake Hayes and Queenstown. The property was originally a high-country merino station before founder John Darby recognised the potential of its free-draining soils and planted vines, laying the foundations for a quality-driven estate. Today, around 80 hectares are planted within the wider property, making Amisfield one of the region’s largest contiguous vineyards. Certified organic, the estate is farmed with a long-term focus on soil health, vine balance and environmental sustainability. This deep respect for land and place is echoed in the winery’s understated architecture, designed to sit quietly within the Central Otago landscape. The wines of Amisfield are shaped by Central Otago’s dramatic semi-continental climate, where warm, dry summers and cold winters deliver naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. All wines are made exclusively from the estate’s organically certified vineyard, planted on free-draining schist and loess soils that bring structure, purity and precision. Pinot Noir sits at the heart of the portfolio, prized for its fine tannins, savoury depth and graceful ageing potential, from the core estate release to the more detailed Breakneck expression. Aromatic whites including Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc are crafted with restraint, texture and clarity, balancing freshness with site expression.
