Hawkshead Winery is a boutique, family-driven estate rooted in the dramatic landscapes of Central Otago’s Gibbston Valley. The winery was founded in the mid-1990s by Denis Marshall, a fourth-generation farmer, conservationist and descendant of pioneering naturalist William Swainson. Drawn by the valley’s cool climate and north-facing slopes, Denis acquired the vineyard land in 1995, planting the first Pinot Noir vines in 2001 alongside partner Ulrike Kurenbach. Hawkshead was established with a clear philosophy: to work in harmony with nature, favouring sustainable vineyard practices and minimal intervention to allow the site to speak for itself. The winery’s name and distinctive bird-illustrated labels honour Swainson’s legacy and deep connection to the natural world.
