"The beautiful bouquet is vivid in its precision, offering up scents of lemon, quince, white flowers, flinty minerality, citrus peel and a touch of lanolin. On the palate the wine is bright, zesty and full-bodied, with a lovely core, stellar mineral drive and cut, laser-like focus and a long, complex and energetic finish. This is stunning Vouvray Sec!" "This dry Vouvray captivates you with its clean and intense nose that reveals ripe fruit aromas. It tastes wonderfully fresh and balanced, with a good acidity and a rich fruitiness of apples, pears, peaches, hazelnuts and almonds. It has a complex and textured finish that lingers on your palate. Elegant and refined."
Bernard Fouquet, a quiet-spoken man, is making some of the most serious Vouvray of the last few vintages. He is now regarded in France and the international press as one of the top three Vouvray producers. No one succeeds better than Bernard in capturing the mineral tones unique to Vouvray’s soil, with the marvellous balance of explosive fruit and titillating sensation of the Chenin Blanc grape. This Vouvray is classified as “Sec” or dry Vouvray and it comes from two flint-stone parcels.
After gaining experience in Alsace and Burgundy, Bernard Fouquet established his own winery in 1982 in the Loire, focussed on the Chenin Blanc grape. He soon created a trial and error knowledge of his terroir and by the mid-late 1990s, when Vouvray had a series of stellar vintages, Fouquet wines were among the foremost in the world market for the price. With an emphasis on purity and use of stainless steel, Fouquet aims to capture his respective terroir characteristic in each style: mainly calcareous clay in his dry and dessert wines, mainly flint/silica in his demi-sec and sparkling wines. Today Fouquet’s labels remain inexpensive but are considered to be among Vouvray’s best at any price.
