In 1857 in the region of Jalisco Mexico, the master distiller Lazaro Gallardo created Agavero, a delicious tequila flavoured liqueur. This is made using blue agave reposado and anejo tequilas which are aged in charred white oak casks. These are then blended together with essence of Damian Flower (a native plant from the Jalisco mountains).

This luscious, smooth and crowd-pleasing Agavero Tequila Liqueur will impress on any occasion. Great liqueur gift for someone special or corporate gift. Buy here in our online liquor store and get delivered direct to your door, we deliver nationwide.

The story of this quite visually stunning tequila liqueur dates back to 1857, when master distiller Lazaro Gallardo created a recipe to impress his close friends. Gallardo had intended for it to remain a private bottling, however, the people of Jalisco clamoured enough to force his hand, and so Agavero became a commercial product. Jalisco, Mexico is where the blue agave plant is grown, and the Los Camachines Distillery (where Agavero is made), is still based there.

The process to make Agavero begins with the master distiller hand blending his own select 100% blue agave reposado and anejo tequilas, both separately aged in specially charred, French Limosin white oak casks (the reposado for nearly a year and the anejo for no less than two years). The tequilas are then blended and re-barreled and infused with a secret ingredient.

That (not so secret) ingredient being the essence of the Damiana flower. For those whose knowledge of indigenous flora of the Americas isn't quite up to speed, Damiana, also known as Turnera diffusa, is a fragrant, low-growing plant whose use as a herbal remedy predates written history. Indigenous cultures believed in its proficiency as a bladder tonic and an aphrodisiac.

The Damiana plant also has a long history as an ingredient in traditional Mexican liqueur, and is in fact so important that it has been classified in Mexico as a ‘national treasure’ and it is prohibited to export it as a live plant. It is also sometimes used in lieu of triple sec in margaritas, and there are claims within Mexican folklore that it was used in the ‘original’ margarita. It is the influence of the Damiana flower that helps create the luscious texture and distinct aroma that truly sets apart this very delicious and utterly unique Mexican spirit.
