Penfolds

Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold, Penfolds began at Magill Estate on the outskirts of Adelaide, where the couple planted vines around their home, Grange Cottage. Mary became a driving force behind the growing winery, laying foundations for the innovative spirit that still defines Penfolds today. Its story changed dramatically again under pioneering Chief Winemaker Max Schubert, whose experimental Grange, first made in 1951 after a formative visit to Bordeaux, helped redefine Australian fine wine. From its historic Magill home, Penfolds expanded through South Australia’s great wine regions and today crafts wines in Australia, California, France and China — an extraordinary evolution from pioneering family winery to global fine wine house. Its winemakers select across vineyards and regions — and increasingly countries — allowing quality and style rather than geographical boundaries to guide each wine. Multi-region blending sits alongside single-vineyard, single-region and multi-varietal expressions, supported by meticulous classification, blending and considered maturation in American and French oak.
