So, who was Jack Daniel? 

The precise date of birth for Jasper Newton 'Jack' Daniel remains a mystery, as his birth records met an unfortunate fate in a courthouse fire. Various sources propose the year 1846, but the brand itself insists on September 1850 as the birthdate. There is also uncertainty surrounding the establishment of the distillery, though it undoubtedly took place sometime between 1860 and 1880 in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Jack had Welsh and Scottish ancestry and was one of thirteen siblings. He enlisted the help of his nephew, the evocatively named Lem Motlow, who managed the company's bookkeeping with an almost Steinbeckian flair.

In the early hours of one fateful morning, Jack Daniel was struggling to open his safe. Legend has it that he frequently forgot the combination and, driven to frustration by the safe's obstinacy, resorted to giving it a solid kick. Such was his intensity that Jack ended up with an infected toe, which eventually led to blood poisoning. In 1907, Jack's deteriorating health prompted him to hand over the distillery to Lem. Sadly, Jack Daniel passed away in 1911.

The Era of Prohibition

As the early 20th century unfolded, the prohibition of alcohol was gaining ground. Tennessee enacted its prohibition in 1910, prompting Lem Motlow to relocate the distillery to St. Louis, Missouri, and later to Birmingham, Alabama. However, local laws and the eventual arrival of nationwide Prohibition led to the distillery's closure.

Lem Motlow subsequently became a Tennessee state senator and played a pivotal role in the repeal of the state's prohibition laws, allowing production to resume in 1938. The interruptions continued during World War II when distillation was paused nationwide between 1942 and 1946, primarily due to concerns about the quality of grains. Lem only resumed production in 1947 when he secured a reliable grain supply.

Is Jack Daniel's Bourbon?

Despite bearing many similarities to bourbon in its production methods, Jack Daniel's whiskey is not classified as bourbon due to one crucial distinction. The whiskey undergoes a unique process of filtration through sugar maple charcoal before maturation. This distinctive process plays a pivotal role in shaping the whiskey's character, leading to its categorisation as Tennessee Whiskey.
