Kweichow Moutai was a favourite drink of People's Republic of China's (PRC) founding father Mao Zedong who famously served it at state dinners during US President Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972. In 1974, the US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told Deng Xiaoping, China’s future leader that “I think if we drink enough Moutai, we can solve anything.”
Maotai or Moutai is a style of Baijiu, a distilled Chinese liquor (spirit) produced in the town of Maotai in China's Guizhou province. Baijiu (sometimes called Shaojiu) is a clear distilled liquor, which can be regarded as the national drink of China. Its name translates as "white wine" but it is, in fact, a high-alcohol spirit. Produced by the state-owned Kweichow Moutai Company, this beverage is distilled from fermented sorghum and now comes in several different varieties.
Kweichow Moutai is a very large, partly state-owned Chinese distillery in the town of Maotai (Moutai) in Guizhou province. Using the town name as a brand, it is the highest profile producer of Baiju, the clear distilled liquor regarded as the national drink, served at important state and diplomatic occasions.
Since 2017 it has passed Diageo as the world's most valuable drinks company. It was reported in 2018 that Kweichow were running out of stock, due to the popularity of their products. Output is limited by the requirement that grain and water must come from Maotai town, and that the liquor must age in buried jars for at least four years before release.
Along with the liquor, the Kweichow Moutai Group also produces and sells beverage and food packaging and industry-specific IT products. Because of the prevalence of fake bottles of Kweichow Moutai, it is also a developer of anti-counterfeiting technology.
