THE KALLESKE STORY
Nestled in the heart of South Australia’s Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family has been nurturing the land and growing exceptional grapes since 1853. Near the village of Greenock, their vineyards have flourished for generations, producing some of the region’s finest fruit. After six generations of dedicated grape-growing, seventh-generation winemaker Troy Kalleske, alongside his brother Tony, brought a dream to life - establishing Kalleske winery and crafting the very first Kalleske wine. With deep respect for tradition, their winery is set on the family estate, where time-honoured techniques transform each harvest into something extraordinary.
The vineyard remains a family affair, lovingly tended by Troy and Tony’s parents, John and Lorraine, along with their brother, Kym. With over forty years of vineyard experience, John ensures the vines, some dating back to 1875, continue to thrive. Spanning 120 acres, the vineyard boasts a remarkable collection of varieties, including Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, and many more. Low-yielding and bursting with character, these grapes are organically and biodynamically grown, reflecting the purity and vitality of their land.
Kalleske wines are estate-grown and handcrafted with a minimalist approach, allowing the vineyard’s essence to shine through. Each bottle tells a story of passion, patience, and the art of winemaking. Since their first release in 2004, Kalleske has gained a reputation for producing premium, artisanal wines that embody the spirit of the Barossa.
A LEGACY ROOTED IN HISTORY
The Kalleske journey began in 1838 when Johann Georg Kalleske and his wife Johanne Dorothea, along with their children, set sail from Prussia to South Australia, seeking a new beginning. By 1853, they had established a farm in Moppa, a picturesque corner of the Barossa Valley. Over the years, the land has supported a variety of endeavours, from orchards and livestock to milling and winemaking.
More than 150 years later, the farm remains in family hands, a testament to their enduring commitment. Today, the sixth and seventh generations continue to cultivate a thriving property where vineyards, livestock, and a dedicated winery exist in harmony.
SUSTAINABILITY AT HEART
For the Kalleske family, sustainability isn’t just a philosophy - it’s a way of life. Every generation has embraced the responsibility of caring for the land, ensuring its health and vitality for years to come. By practising organic and biodynamic farming, they protect the soil, air, and waterways, fostering an environment where grapes can grow naturally and purely.
This mindful approach not only nurtures the ecosystem but also enhances the quality of the wines. With each sip, Kalleske wines express the authenticity, vibrancy, and integrity of their origins. Through dedication, innovation, and a deep respect for nature, the Kalleske family continues to craft wines that celebrate both heritage and the future.
