Collection: Thomson Whisky
Thomson Whisky was founded in 2009 by New Zealand distiller Mathew Thomson, with a clear ambition to create a distinctly New Zealand style of whisky. Established initially in Riverhead, north of Auckland, Thomson set out to challenge traditional whisky norms by embracing local ingredients, smoke and experimentation. From its earliest releases, the distillery gained attention for reviving peat-smoked whisky in New Zealand and for its bold, flavour-driven approach. Now based in South Auckland, Thomson Whisky remains independently owned and driven by curiosity, craftsmanship and a willingness to push boundaries. The distillery has played a pivotal role in shaping modern New Zealand whisky, earning a reputation for innovation, authenticity and a fearless expression of place.

Thomson Whisky is best known for its single malt whiskies, crafted using locally grown barley and smoked with New Zealand peat or native mānuka wood, creating a uniquely regional style. Production favours small batches, long fermentations and careful distillation to build depth and texture. Whiskies are matured in a range of casks, including ex-bourbon, wine and locally sourced oak, allowing flavour complexity to develop while retaining clarity. Limited releases and experimental bottlings sit alongside core expressions, reflecting the distillery’s restless creativity. Thomson’s whiskies have received significant international acclaim, including gold medals and trophies at the World Whiskies Awards, confirming their place among the most distinctive spirits produced in the Southern Hemisphere.
