Situated on China’s ancient Loess Plateau in Shanxi Province, Chateau Rongzi cultivates vineyards between 950 and 1,300 metres above sea level where intense sunlight and dramatic day–night temperature shifts produce wines of remarkable freshness and aromatic precision. Founded in 2007 by Zhang Wenquan, the estate gained international recognition through the consultancy of Jean-Claude Berrouet, the legendary former winemaker of Château Pétrus. Through careful vineyard management, hand harvesting and gentle winemaking techniques, the estate crafts elegant wines that showcase the growing sophistication of China’s emerging fine wine regions.

Vineyards sit around 1,100 metres above sea level where powerful sunshine and dramatic diurnal temperature shifts preserve vibrant acidity while developing complex aromatics. Each winter the vines must be buried beneath the soil to survive freezing Siberian winds — a demanding practice unique to northern Chinese vineyards. The wine matures within the estate’s remarkable loess cave cellars, a vast underground network maintaining naturally stable temperature and humidity. This environment preserves purity and minerality, resulting in a refined white defined by freshness, citrus brightness and a distinctive flinty finish.
