ACCOLADES

Very intense ruby red colour, the nose reveals an enticing range of steeped cherry and fig cake flavours with accents of dried thyme, pomegranate and espresso. In the mouth it is creamy and with lightly firm tannins and acidity that’s just at the right level to accentuate and perpetuate the flavours. The whole tasting is embellished with a very pleasant tannic texture, which fades towards a spiced finish of excellent persistence.

"The historical context of the dreamy Belle Époque gives an idea of the light-hearted and brief breeze that swept through Verona when Giacomo Battista Tommasi married Augusta in 1902 and went to live with her family.

He continued to cultivate the family land in the hills of the Valpolicella. Still, he also began to think about wine not as the thirst-quenching drink, but as a quality product to promote as lively and delectable for celebrations and get-togethers.

His sons would continue to work through two world wars, contributing to the small community of Pedemonte where we still live and work today.

Our fathers, Sergio, Franco, Ezio and Dario, began the modern expansion of the family business, carefully buying and managing vineyards in Valpolicella Classica and the Veronese denominations of Lugana, Bardolino, Custoza and Soave during the post-war economic boom.

In the 1970s, the brothers built the modern winery and offices. The winery continued to grow, evolve and consolidate. The objective has always been ownership of vineyards, and complete control of the process from vine to table under the Tommasi label.

While we have expanded far beyond the first vintage of Amarone della Valpolicella Classico officially produced in 1959, Amarone is worth a special introduction as the wine that changed the trajectory of our family business. We have always strived to improve each vintage to perpetuate our great-grandfather's ethos to make wines that people love to share.

Tommasi Amarone Classico has opened export markets and allowed us to grow and reinvest. It is a family icon that has made us proud ambassadors of Italian wine in over 85 countries. Monica Larner's description perfectly captures how Amarone has forged our company vision and has kept us grounded and faithful to our origins and the extended narrative of the grape, even as we respectfully manage our foray beyond the hills of the Valpolicella Classica to spread the word on often less familiar grape narratives.

As the fourth generation, we assumed roles of responsibility within the company in 1997, allowing us to accelerate the winery's growth. We acquired the single largest privately owned vineyard in the Valpolicella, Tenuta Prunea and important vineyards like the Conca d'Oro and La Groletta in 2000. We also expanded in other denominations, principally around Lake Garda, but also beyond the Veneto region."
