Craftsmanship & Story

Ata Rangi's story began in 1980 when founder Clive Paton planted vines on a stony sheep paddock on the edge of Martinborough, becoming one of the region's pioneering winegrowers. Joined by Phyll Pattie and his sister Ali Paton, Clive helped establish Martinborough as one of New Zealand's great Pinot Noir regions. Today, long-standing winemaker Helen Masters continues that vision, crafting the flagship Pinot Noir from mature vines across six vineyard sites on the Martinborough Terrace. Meticulous organic viticulture, indigenous fermentation and thoughtful whole-bunch inclusion preserve the character of these old alluvial gravels, producing a wine celebrated for its perfume, texture, savoury detail and longevity.

Its remarkable story traces back to Pinot Noir cuttings intercepted at Auckland Airport in the 1970s, reportedly sourced from one of Burgundy's finest estates, with Ata Rangi later becoming an important mother block for the clone in New Zealand.
