Hazelburn 10 Year Old offers a fascinating alternative expression of Springbank’s celebrated Campbeltown character. Completely unpeated and triple distilled, this flagship Hazelburn single malt spends a full decade in bourbon casks, creating an elegant interplay of tropical fruit, citrus, creamy sweetness and subtle minerality. Produced entirely on-site using Springbank’s famously traditional methods and bottled at 46% ABV, it is a beautifully distinctive Scotch for enthusiasts seeking the lighter, more refined side of this cult Campbeltown distillery.
Tasting Notes & Experience
Light and inviting, Hazelburn 10 Year Old opens with baked pineapple, crisp orchard fruit and lemon sherbet, layered with honeycomb and dried orange peel. The palate is wonderfully creamy, bringing green apple together with custard, pastel de nata and soft malt, balanced by a subtle savoury edge. As it develops, gentle ginger and toasted coconut emerge before a long, poised finish of salted caramel, vanilla and delicate earthiness, underpinned by the distinctive mineral character of Campbeltown.

Craftsmanship & Story
Hazelburn is made at Springbank Distillery, one of the great surviving names of Campbeltown and a remarkable guardian of traditional Scotch whisky production. Officially licensed in 1828 and still owned by the Mitchell family, Springbank remains unique in Scotland for carrying out every stage of whisky production on-site, from malting the barley through to maturation and bottling. The distillery floor malts 100% of its own barley by hand, employs long fermentations and continues to use historic copper pot stills, including a directly fired wash still. Hazelburn takes this painstaking approach in a distinctly different direction: its malt is dried entirely with hot air, without peat, before the spirit is passed through all three stills for full triple distillation. First produced at Springbank in 1997, Hazelburn also revives the name of one of Campbeltown’s long-lost distilleries, connecting this elegant modern single malt with the town’s extraordinary whisky heritage.
Special Features
Within Springbank’s family of single malts, Hazelburn occupies a character all its own. Where Springbank is lightly peated and Longrow embraces a more assertively smoky style, Hazelburn is completely unpeated and triple distilled, producing a lighter, fruitier and particularly refined interpretation of the distillery’s character. Yet its delicacy does not come at the expense of traditional craftsmanship: the barley is floor malted on-site, the whisky is produced through Springbank’s famously hands-on process and every bottle is filled at the distillery without chill filtration or artificial colouring. Bottling at 46% ABV preserves texture and flavour while allowing the whisky’s orchard and tropical fruit, creamy malt and subtle mineral qualities to remain beautifully defined. For Springbank enthusiasts, it offers a compelling opportunity to experience the distillery through an altogether different lens.
Ageing & Maturation
Hazelburn 10 Year Old spends its full decade maturing exclusively in bourbon casks, a beautifully sympathetic partner for its delicate triple-distilled spirit. The American oak develops layers of vanilla, honeycomb, custard, citrus and toasted coconut while leaving ample space for Hazelburn’s naturally bright fruit and subtle savoury character to emerge. Ten years of maturation brings these elements together with a creamy texture and gentle oak structure, while hints of salted caramel, earthiness and minerality provide a distinctly Campbeltown counterpoint to the sweeter bourbon-cask influence.
Recognition & Critical Acclaim
Hazelburn 10 Year Old follows a different path from whiskies built around extensive competition medals. Produced in comparatively limited quantities at Springbank, its reputation has instead grown through specialist whisky criticism, enthusiast appreciation and the enduring demand surrounding traditionally made Campbeltown single malts.

Its combination of limited production, uncompromising Springbank craftsmanship and an unusually elegant expression of Campbeltown character has made the 10 Year Old a quietly sought-after bottle for enthusiasts around the world.
Food Pairings
The bright, creamy character of Hazelburn 10 Year Old calls for food with elegance rather than weight. Brown-butter scallops beautifully echo its subtle coastal minerality while allowing pineapple, orchard fruit and citrus to shine, while a mild aged cheese complements its creamy malt and gentle savoury edge. For something sweeter, buttery shortbread or a vanilla crème brûlée draws out honeycomb, custard and toasted coconut, with ginger and salted caramel lingering through the finish.
Perfect for Gifting or Sipping
Hazelburn 10 Year Old makes an exceptional gift for the serious Scotch enthusiast, particularly those who appreciate traditional production and the increasingly sought-after whiskies of Campbeltown. Its Springbank provenance, limited production, complete absence of peat and unusual triple distillation give it genuine distinction, while ten years in bourbon casks reveals a beautifully different side of one of Scotland’s most admired independent distilleries.
This is first and foremost a whisky to savour. Pour it neat and allow a little time in the glass for its tropical fruit, citrus, custard and mineral nuances to unfold. A few drops of water can reveal further orchard fruit and softness, although its natural 46% strength already offers a wonderfully composed balance of texture, freshness and flavour. For Springbank collectors and curious enthusiasts alike, Hazelburn provides a compelling glimpse into the lighter, more elegant face of Campbeltown.
