The Reserva de la Familia Extra Añejo tequila was the world's first extra-añejo tequila, commemorating the Cuervo family's 200-year tequila legacy. The colour is dark and rich with aromas of fresh vanilla, roasted agave, and medium oak. On the palate, flavours of medium oak, agave, roasted pineapple, vanilla and piloncillo sugar. With subtle notes of leather, cinnamon, pears, and red apples. The finish of the tequila is long, silky and rich with subtle notes of more oak, vanilla, and roasted apples.

Reserva de la Familia Extra Añejo is the award-winning pinnacle of the Jose Cuervo family of tequilas. This Extra-Anejo tequila is aged in oak barrels for an average of 3 years. The final blend includes Tequila from reserves aged over 30 years. Only the estate's finest 10-year-old agaves are hand-selected. Only the most flavourful inner portion of the agave's pina (heart) is used. Vibrant, with a full, mellow flavour combines floral, agave, vanilla and Cognac-like flavours.
For over 10 generations this spirit was a family secret that was only shared with the closest of friends. In 1995, to celebrate their 200 year anniversary, they decided to share this special blend of tequila with the world. Reserva de la Familia is best served neat, allowing for full appreciation of its flavours, aroma, and velvety finish.
As part of their ongoing support of Mexican culture, the Jose Cuervo family also commissions a Mexico-based artist to design original artwork for the collectors box each year
Jose Cuervo, one of the best-selling Tequila in the world. In 1758, José Antonio de Cuervo y Valdés was given a issued a grant of land ownership by King Fernand VI to plant agave on his lands for producing Tequila. In 1795 he was granted the first license by King Carlos IV of Spain to produce and distribute Tequila, and by 1880 his Tequila was being commercially bottled and distributed at La Rojeña distillery, founded in 1812, the oldest active distillery in Latin America. It was first exported to the United States in 1852. Tequila was known as "mezcal de tequila" until 1893, after this time Tequila makers and the Mexican government dropped "mezcal" from the name. So officially, Cuervo's first bottled ‘Tequila’ was sold in 1906!
Oddly enough, Cuervo was the first major brand to sponsor beach volleyball, and is widely credited with popularising the sport. The brand is still family owned and run by descendants of Jose Antonio, and all Jose Cuervo Tequila is still made in the town of Tequila in the state of Jalisco in Mexico.
