Anyone familiar with Ferruccio Lamborghini will fondly recall his boundless creativity and keen eye for aesthetics, epitomised by his iconic sports cars. It comes as no surprise, then, that in the 1960s, captivated by the rugged yet enchanting landscape, he chose Umbriato as his retreat from the illustrious automotive industry to return to his agricultural roots. The Lamborghini estate nestles between the southern shores of Lake Trasimeno and the charming medieval village of Panicale. This exquisite location, straddling the Umbria and Tuscany border, is just a few kilometres from Cortona and the Chiana Valley.
Ferruccio Lamborghini purchased the property in the 1960s after falling in love with the area's gently rolling hills. Upon retiring from the car manufacturing business, he embraced his passion for farming, planting a variety of grape types—both red and white. Besides the traditional Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo, he ventured into cultivating Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which were quite unconventional choices at the time.
In the mid-1990s, Patrizia Lamborghini took over the estate's management, furthering her father’s vision of producing exceptional wines. Under her leadership, the estate's commitment to quality and innovative winemaking intensified. The majority of the vineyards have since been replanted with preferred varieties like Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grechetto. Today, the new vineyards span a total area of 30 hectares, with plans for future replanting of the entire vineyard.
The relentless pursuit of quality and a deep respect for the land's unique characteristics have driven a remarkable transformation in vineyard management and winemaking practices, expertly guided by Riccardo Cotarella for over two decades. These dedicated efforts have culminated in the creation of modern wines of exceptionally high standards.
